Can Chiropractic Help Colic?

Colic is one of the most exhausting things a new parent can face. Here's what the research says about chiropractic care — and why so many Charlotte families find relief.

If you're reading this at 2 a.m. with a screaming baby who won't stop — first, you're not alone. Colic affects roughly 1 in 5 infants, and it's one of the most common reasons parents bring their newborns to see Dr. Bryan Pries at Revival Family Chiropractic in Charlotte.

What Is Colic, Exactly?

Colic is defined by the "rule of threes": crying for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks — in an otherwise healthy, well-fed baby. It typically peaks around 6 weeks of age and resolves by 3–4 months, though those weeks can feel like an eternity.

Despite decades of research, the exact cause of colic remains unknown. What we do know is that it's not caused by bad parenting, and it's not something babies "just do." Most cases involve some combination of gut motility issues, nervous system hypersensitivity, and — increasingly recognized in the research — spinal tension from the birth process.

The Birth Process and Your Baby's Nervous System

Birth — even a "normal" vaginal delivery — places significant mechanical stress on a baby's cervical spine (neck) and cranium. During delivery, the baby's head and neck can be pulled, rotated, and compressed as they navigate the birth canal. C-sections, forceps, and vacuum deliveries add additional forces.

This stress can create what chiropractors call a vertebral subluxation — a misalignment or restriction in the spine that irritates the surrounding nerves. In infants, the vagus nerve is particularly vulnerable. The vagus nerve is the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system and plays a direct role in gut motility, digestion, and the body's ability to calm down after stress.

When the vagus nerve is irritated by spinal tension, the result can be a baby who can't settle, has difficulty feeding, struggles to pass gas, and cries inconsolably — the classic picture of colic.

What Does the Research Say?

Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have examined chiropractic care for infantile colic. The results are encouraging:

  • A 1999 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that infants receiving chiropractic adjustments cried significantly less than those receiving dimethicone (a common colic medication).
  • A 2012 systematic review in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies concluded that manual therapy — including chiropractic — showed a consistent positive effect on colic symptoms across multiple studies.
  • A 2019 Cochrane-style review found that spinal manipulation was associated with reduced crying time in colicky infants, though the authors noted the need for larger trials.

The research isn't perfect — blinding is difficult in manual therapy studies — but the clinical evidence and the volume of parent-reported outcomes are hard to ignore.

What Does a Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustment Look Like?

This is the question most parents ask before their first visit — and understandably so. Pediatric adjustments look nothing like adult adjustments. There is no cracking, no twisting, and no forceful manipulation.

For a newborn or infant, Dr. Bryan uses gentle fingertip pressure — typically less than one pound of force — applied to specific areas of the spine. Many babies sleep through it. The goal is to reduce tension in the nervous system and restore normal movement to restricted spinal segments.

A typical visit for a colicky baby lasts about 15–20 minutes and includes a thorough assessment before any adjustment is performed.

What Parents in Charlotte Are Saying

"Dr. Bryan got my baby to sleep through the night after 1 visit. If you are a new mom, you need to go to him! He is a miracle worker for babies! We have such a happy calm baby now." — Makenzie

Is Chiropractic Right for Your Baby?

Chiropractic care isn't a guaranteed cure for colic — nothing is. But for many families, it provides meaningful relief when nothing else has worked. If your baby has been evaluated by your pediatrician and ruled out for other causes (reflux, dairy intolerance, etc.), a chiropractic evaluation is a reasonable next step.

At Revival Family Chiropractic in Charlotte's Oakhurst neighborhood, we start with a thorough conversation and a neurological assessment before recommending any care. We'll be honest with you about what we can and can't help with.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many chiropractic visits does it take to help a colicky baby?

Most parents notice a meaningful change within 2–4 visits. Some babies respond after the very first adjustment. Dr. Bryan will give you a realistic picture after the initial evaluation.

Is chiropractic safe for a newborn?

Yes. Pediatric chiropractic adjustments use no more pressure than you'd use to check a tomato for ripeness — typically less than a pound of force. The technique is completely different from adult adjustments.

What causes colic?

Colic is defined as crying for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks in an otherwise healthy baby. The exact cause is unknown, but nervous system tension, gut motility issues, and birth-related spinal stress are common contributing factors.
